Services

Human-Centred Research & Evaluation

We investigate how people interact with technology using empirical research. From usability testing and cognitive walkthroughs to field studies and analytics, we uncover actionable insights to improve design, adoption, and performance.

UX & Service Design for Emerging Tech

We apply HCI principles to design and evaluate user experiences for AI, XR, and complex digital systems. Our work bridges human factors, interface design, and service innovation to ensure technology delivers real-world impact.

Behavioural Data & Interaction Analytics

We use advanced qualitative and quantitative methods to understand user behaviour at scale. Our data-driven approach supports evidence-based decision-making for product teams and researchers.

Immersive & Intelligent Systems Research

We develop and evaluate cutting-edge solutions such as virtual reality training, AI-driven interfaces, and intelligent decision-support tools—integrating rigorous research with applied innovation.

Portrait of Dr. Shiva Pedram

Dr. Shiva Pedram (i3Lab Manager)

Dr. Shiva Pedram is an expert in Human-Computer Interaction, specialising in the integration of extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to design cutting-edge, human-centred systems. She applies multidisciplinary approaches that combine UX research, service design, and co-design to develop XR-AI solutions. As Lab Manager of i3Lab, she leads cross-disciplinary projects that bridge technological innovation with inclusive, evidence-based design.

Portrait of Associate Professor Marc Adam

A/Prof. Marc Adam

A/Prof Marc Adam specialises in the interplay of users' cognition and affect in human computer interaction with applications in cybersecurity, e-commerce and e-health. He has extensive expertise in quantitative and qualitative user experience design and testing. He aims at expanding theories explaining how systems design influences user perceptions and behaviours and how system designers can involve end-users in co-design solutions.

Portrait of Professor Karen Blackmore

Prof. Karen Blackmore

Professor Karen Blackmore is an award-winning academic leader and technology researcher whose career is defined by a passion for solving complex problems. She has expertise in the study of affective processing and engagement in virtual environments. With a focus on data analytics, experimental design and physiological measurements, Blackmore's research considers how objective measures can be used to quantify the complex interactions occurring in the game space.

Portrait of Dr. Jacqueline Bailey

Dr. Jacqueline Bailey

Dr. Jacqueline Bailey specialises in human-centred computing, with a focus on virtual humans, avatars, and immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. Her work explores how the design of these technologies influences user perception, emotional engagement, and learning outcomes in sectors including healthcare, defence, and education. She has extensive expertise in the co-design and evaluation of inclusive digital solutions.

Founding Team

In 2014 the i3Lab was co‐founded by Prof. Karen Blackmore, Dr. Shamus Smith and Dr. Keith Nesbitt – a team whose vision was to tackle "industry-relevant problems" through cutting-edge human–computer interaction research. Their pioneering leadership and hard work established a strong foundation for the lab's unique capabilities. We are deeply grateful for their foresight, dedication and many contributions in creating i3Lab and setting the stage for its continued success under new leadership.
